Kintsukuroi or Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with silver, gold, or platinum laquer. The philosophy is to treat breakage and repair as part of the object’s history, rather than to disguise it.
As therapists, we incorporate this philosophy in our work with people. Trauma and pain can cause great damage and those experiences never go away, they will always be in one’s past. However, with healing work, we, together, can create a new work of art that respects our past, and allows us to find a new way to be in the world with beauty.
